The Impact of Social Media on Today's Society
I often imagine what life would be like if we didn't have access to social media. There are 24 hours in a day, and according to CNN, the average teenager spends 9 hours per day on social media. I've started to notice how important social media is in today's society it's all about how you dress, look, and eat. Social media sensations are always setting new trends, leading kids to believe that they must look and dress a specific way in order to satisfy expectations.
When I'm with a bunch of friends, the first thing they do is
take out their phones and check Instagram for the latest updates. They do this
for nearly 30 minutes without saying anything to one another! I know some
people who have become antisocial and oblivious to the real world as a result
of spending so much time on their phones; they would rather be on their phone
than spend time with friends or family. Even I believe that social media has
had an impact on my life, and like any other teenager, I spend time on it and a
lot of it has affected me in the same ways as others, but now that I'm aware of
the dangers, I try to limit myself to an hour per day because I believe it's
crucial to experience real life rather than what's viewed on your phone. I also
understand that it is acceptable to be yourself rather than someone who others
believe you should be.
Some people nowadays starve themselves to look like the
celebrities with tens of thousands of followers. Some people are so
self-conscious and anxious that they don't feel comfortable going out in public
without makeup! This is because they are always comparing themselves to people
they perceive to be flawless based on what they see on social media.
One bad result of so many teenagers having social media
profiles is cyberbullying. When not examined closely, cyberbullying may not
appear to be a significant problem, but it has the potential to destroy many
friendships, relationships, and an individual's whole profile. One can sit
behind a screen and say nasty things or even purposefully upload embarrassing photographs
of others, and the worst part is that this can be done quietly and anonymously.
Parents nowadays appear to be continuously trying to get
their children to go outdoors and socialize with others, but all they know is
their phones and the amusement they provide. Teens spend more time on their
phones than they do sleeping, at school, or with their parents, and this needs
to change. Parents should not have to persuade their children to play; it
should come easily to them since, as a child, you have a lot of energy and want
to be active and explore the outdoors and all of the wonderful things there are
to do. I believe that today's teens and children have never had the chance to
experience youth as it should be: painting pictures, playing with friends, looking
for butterflies, and being creative with what you have to make your own fun. I
remember as a child always being outside, whether it was making up games to
play, jumping off of our playhouse to test the theory of flight, or even silly
things like teaching our cats to be princesses. Through social media, the
children meet a variety of dangerous people. This is why so many teenagers grow
up to be drug and alcohol addicts; they learned it at a young age and believe
it is OK.
There are numerous more bad consequences of social media,
but I choose to limit this essay blog on the youth because they are
the future. I can only picture how much worse the future will be if our
generation continues to think like this.
Limiting yourself to an hour a day or even trying to see how
long you can go without using your phone is a superb idea since you'll see how
much you've missed out on while using it, and you'll begin to make decisions
for yourself based on what you prefer rather than what others think. Place your
phone down and experience life through your own eyes.
